Alexandria, Minnesota: 350 Lakes, a Viking Mystery & Miles of Trail

|4 min read

Alexandria, Minnesota has 350 lakes within a short drive. Not "bodies of water" or "ponds" — actual lakes with walleye and bass and sandy beaches and resorts that families have been coming back to for generations. This is the heart of Minnesota lake country, and it's exactly as good as the locals say it is.

But Alexandria also has a mystery. In 1898, a Swedish immigrant named Olof Ohman claimed to have found a stone inscribed with Norse runes buried in the roots of a tree on his farm. The Kensington Runestone — now housed at the Runestone Museum downtown — suggests that Viking explorers reached central Minnesota in 1362. Scholars have debated its authenticity for over a century. Whether you believe it's real or an elaborate hoax, the museum and the surrounding story make for a surprisingly engaging stop.

With 7 dump stations, a state park campground on one of the best lakes in the chain, and a 55-mile paved bike trail running right through town, Alexandria earns more than a drive-by.

Dump Stations

Seven dump stations serve the Alexandria area, primarily at the campgrounds and RV parks around the chain of lakes. Lake Carlos State Park has dump facilities for campers.

Where to Camp

Lake Carlos State Park — The Clear Choice

Ten miles north of town on Lake Carlos — one of the clearest and deepest lakes in the Alexandria chain. 124 campsites with electric hookups. Hiking trails, swimming beach, fishing access, and a boat launch. The lake is deep enough for lake trout, which is unusual this far south in Minnesota. Book summer weekends in advance — lake country fills up from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Lake Resorts

Alexandria's 350+ lakes are ringed with family-run resorts that have been operating for decades. Many offer RV sites alongside cabin rentals, with lake access, docks, and boat rentals included. These aren't corporate campgrounds — they're the kind of places where the same families come back every July. Ask around or check Explore Alexandria for listings.

The Central Lakes State Trail

This is a major draw for cyclists. The Central Lakes State Trail runs 55 miles of paved surface from Fergus Falls through Alexandria to Osakis — built on a former railroad corridor through lake country and small towns. It's flat, smooth, and scenic. If you travel with bikes, this trail can fill multiple days of riding. The trailhead in Alexandria is easily accessible from campgrounds.

The Viking Mystery

The Runestone Museum downtown houses the Kensington Runestone and makes the case (compelling or not) that Norse explorers reached Minnesota 130 years before Columbus sailed. The museum also has a Viking ship replica and Fort Alexandria, a recreated 19th-century frontier fort. Whether you're a history buff, a skeptic, or just curious, it's worth an hour.
