Thirty miles southwest of Bemidji, you can walk across the Mississippi River. Not a bridge — across it, stone to stone. At Lake Itasca State Park, the mightiest river in North America begins as a stream you can step over. It's one of those moments that makes you reconsider the scale of things.
Back in Bemidji proper, Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox stand watch over the lake in statue form — the most photographed roadside attraction in America, if the locals are to be believed. A 115-mile paved trail runs right through town. The lakes are clean, the walleye are biting, and in summer, the mosquitoes are weapons-grade.
With 9 dump stations in the area and camping on the lake, Bemidji is a genuine "Up North" Minnesota destination for RVers. Just don't come in January unless you're built for -30°F.
Dump Stations
The Bemidji area has 9 dump stations, primarily at the campgrounds and RV parks around town. Lake Bemidji State Park and the KOA both have dump facilities for campers. For an area this size in northern Minnesota, that's solid coverage.

Where to Camp
Lake Bemidji State Park — The Natural Choice
Wooded sites on the lake with electric hookups. From $29/night. The park connects directly to the Paul Bunyan Trail, so you can bike from your campsite to town without touching a road. Book summer weekends in advance — this park is popular and the season is short.
Bemidji KOA Journey
Full hookups from $51/night with group sites available. The standard KOA amenities apply — clean facilities, predictable quality, and enough room for big rigs. A solid option if you want full services.
Royal Oaks RV Park
Full hookups. Positioned 23 miles from the Mississippi headwaters at Lake Itasca, making it a good base if Itasca is your primary destination.
Free & Low-Cost Camping
The Chippewa National Forest offers dispersed camping east and south of Bemidji. Minnesota state forests also allow dispersed camping. These are primitive — no hookups, no water, no dump stations — but they're free, and in Minnesota's north woods, the setting makes up for the lack of services.
The Two Must-Dos
Walk Across the Mississippi
At Lake Itasca State Park (30 miles southwest via MN-197), the Mississippi River begins as a shallow, ankle-deep stream flowing out of the north end of Lake Itasca. You can walk across it on stepping stones. A marker identifies the spot. Thousands of people do this every year, and it never gets old — you're standing at the beginning of a 2,340-mile river that empties into the Gulf of Mexico. The park itself has camping if you want to stay.
Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox
The giant statues of Paul Bunyan and his blue ox Babe stand on the shore of Lake Bemidji — they've been there since 1937. Whether you're a roadside Americana person or not, the photo is obligatory. The lakefront park around them is pleasant, with a walking path and views across the water.
The Paul Bunyan Trail
This is a big deal. The Paul Bunyan State Trail runs 115 miles of paved surface from Brainerd to Bemidji, making it one of the longest paved trails in the country. Biking, inline skating, and hiking are all popular. The trail passes through lake country and small towns the entire way. If you're traveling with bikes, this trail alone justifies a multi-day stay.
When to Visit
| Season | Highs | Lows | What to Know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summer (Jun-Aug) | 78°F | 56°F | The season. Warm, long days, lake life at its best. Also: mosquitoes. June and July are brutal. Bring DEET. |
| Fall (Sep-Oct) | 52°F | 32°F | Fall colours are spectacular across the north woods. September is pleasant. October gets cold fast. Fewer bugs. |
| Spring (Apr-May) | 52°F | 30°F | Late thaw — lakes may still have ice into April ("ice-out" is a local obsession). Muddy and unpredictable. |
| Winter (Nov-Mar) | 14°F | -6°F | Bemidji is one of the coldest cities in the lower 48. Temps can reach -30°F. Heavy snow. Winter RV camping is for the extremely well-prepared only. Ice fishing and snowmobiling are huge here. |
About the cold: This isn't a gentle northern winter. Bemidji regularly sees wind chills that make Fargo look tropical. If you're heading up in anything other than June through September, winterize your rig completely. Frozen pipes are a certainty, not a risk.
About the mosquitoes: Legendary. Minnesota's north woods in June and July are ground zero. Head nets, DEET, and long sleeves are not optional. They ease up in August and mostly disappear after September.
RV Services
- Fuel: Gas and diesel available along US-2 through Bemidji. Fill up here — services thin out in any direction.
- Propane: Hardware stores in town.
- Groceries: Walmart and Marketplace Foods in Bemidji. Stock up before heading to Itasca or into the national forest.
Plan Your Bemidji Trip
Come in summer when the days are long and the lakes are warm. Walk across the Mississippi. Bike the Paul Bunyan Trail. Take a photo with Babe the Blue Ox. Camp on Lake Bemidji and watch the northern sky. Just pack the bug spray.
