Afton, Oklahoma: Route 66's Narrowest Road, Grand Lake & Vintage Packards

|4 min read

Somewhere in northeast Oklahoma, the original Route 66 still exists as it was paved in the 1920s — a ribbon of concrete barely 9 feet wide, running through farmland with no center line, no shoulders, and no room for anything bigger than a Model T. The Route 66 Ribbon Road near Afton is one of the most remarkable surviving pieces of the Mother Road. You can't drive your RV on it — it's literally too narrow — but you can park on the adjacent road and walk it, feeling the history under your feet.

Afton itself is a small crossroads town that most people pass through on their way to Grand Lake O' the Cherokees — a 46,500-acre lake with over 1,300 miles of shoreline that's one of the premier boating and fishing destinations in the region. Between the lake, the Route 66 heritage, a renovated service station full of vintage Packard cars, and a state park with a 77-foot waterfall, Afton quietly delivers one of the best RV stops in Oklahoma.

The 5 dump stations in the area and full-service lakefront RV resorts make it easy to stay a while.

Dump Stations

Five dump stations serve the Afton-Grand Lake area, primarily at the lakefront RV resorts. Grand Lake RV Resort and Marina Del Rey both have dump facilities for guests.

Where to Camp

Grand Lake RV Resort — The Full Package

128 standard sites plus 43 waterfront sites with decks. Pool, fitness centre, laundry. Year-round operation. This is a resort-level park — the waterfront sites with private decks overlooking Grand Lake are the kind of camping that doesn't feel like roughing it at all.

Marina Del Rey Resort

A 51-acre resort on Grand Lake with full hookup sites, dump station, fire pits, and direct lake access. Big enough to not feel crowded, small enough to still feel like a campground. Good for boaters — the marina is right there.

Lakeshore Bliss Resort

Lakefront RV park on Grand Lake with nightly, weekly, and monthly rentals. Year-round operation. A more relaxed alternative to the bigger resorts.

Route 66 Heritage

The Ribbon Road

Two surviving stretches of original 1920s Route 66 pavement, only 9 feet wide. This is what the Mother Road actually looked like — not the wide, commercial highway most people imagine, but a narrow rural road built for a time when cars were smaller and slower and the whole idea of driving across America was still new. Park your rig on the adjacent road and walk it. It's too narrow for any modern vehicle, but that's part of the point.

Afton Station

A renovated Route 66 service station that houses a collection of vintage Packard automobiles — gleaming pre-war luxury cars displayed in the very building where travellers once filled up on their way to California. Free to visit. The volunteers who run it are passionate about Route 66 history and happy to talk.

Grand Lake O' the Cherokees

The main event for most visitors. 46,500 surface acres with 1,300+ miles of shoreline — for context, that's more shoreline than many states have on their ocean coast. The lake is known for:

  • Bass fishing — Largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass. National tournaments are held here regularly.
  • Catfish — Channel and flathead, with some reaching 50+ pounds.
  • Boating and water sports — Full-service marinas, boat rentals, and enough open water to never feel crowded.
  • Swimming — Multiple beaches and swim areas around the lake.

Natural Falls State Park

A 77-foot natural waterfall in a forested canyon. Hiking trails and picnic areas surround the falls. It's a short drive from Afton and makes for a perfect half-day trip. The falls are most impressive after spring rains.

Tips

  1. Stock up in Grove or Vinita. Afton is small — groceries and supplies are limited in town.
  2. The Ribbon Road is too narrow for RVs. Park nearby and walk it.
  3. Afton Station is free. The Packard collection is worth a stop even if you're not a car person.
  4. Summer weekends on Grand Lake are packed. Book resort sites in advance or come midweek.
  5. Tornado season peaks April through May. Keep a weather radio in your RV.

Plan Your Afton Stop

Afton is where Route 66 nostalgia meets a lake big enough to get lost on. Walk the narrowest surviving stretch of the Mother Road, fish for bass in a lake with more shoreline than some ocean states, and see vintage Packards in a service station that's been here since the highway was new.
