Minden has several RV campgrounds and parks in this Carson Valley community at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, with some offering free camping options. Minden and its twin town Gardnerville form the commercial heart of the Carson Valley, a broad agricultural basin at about 4,700 feet elevation with stunning views of the Sierra Nevada rising to the west and the Pine Nut Range to the east. The town was founded in 1906 as a planned community by the Virginia & Truckee Railway and retains a tidy, well-organized downtown with brick buildings along Esmeralda Avenue. The Carson Valley is renowned in the soaring and gliding community for its exceptional thermal conditions, and the Minden-Tahoe Airport hosts glider operations that take advantage of wave lift generated by the Sierra winds.
