Before You Go: Motorhome & Caravan Trip Essentials
Dump stations are only one piece of the trip puzzle. Before you set out for your Italy trip, it's worth taking thirty minutes to check that the basics are in place — the four areas below are where unprepared travellers most often get stung.
Check your motorhome or caravan insurance
A dedicated motorhome or caravan policy covers the rebuild value, fitted contents and awning that ordinary car cover ignores. Make sure your Green Card / cross-border cover is valid for every country on your route, and if you're financing, comprehensive cover is usually required. Premiums vary widely by value, storage and mileage — compare specialist insurers before the season.
Arrange European breakdown cover
National motoring clubs such as ADAC (Germany) or the ACI (Italy) offer breakdown assistance, but check the vehicle weight and length limits — many standard policies won't recover a heavy motorhome. For cross-border touring, take out European breakdown cover with repatriation so a failure far from home doesn't strand you. Good policies recover the whole outfit.
Weigh up an extended warranty
New-motorhome manufacturer warranties are shorter than many buyers expect, and habitation faults — damp, appliances, electrics — get expensive once cover lapses. An extended mechanical or habitation warranty can run to several thousand euros if something major fails. Price one before the factory cover ends, not after a fault appears.
Budget for fuel, tolls and vignettes
Fuel, motorway tolls, vignettes (Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia…) and aire or campsite fees add up fast across a multi-country trip. A fee-free travel card with no foreign-transaction charges and a fair exchange rate saves real money. Working out toll and vignette costs per country up front avoids surprises at the border.
