Quick Overview
Zion is a Lake County city on the far northeastern edge of Illinois, sitting right on the Lake Michigan shoreline just south of the Wisconsin border in one of the most naturally scenic locations in the Chicago metro area. With several motorhome campgrounds and parks in the area, including some free options, Zion offers lakefront and near-lakefront camping in a location that's surprisingly natural and peaceful for being within commuting distance of Chicago. Illinois Beach State Park -- the only state park on Lake Michigan in all of Illinois -- stretches along the shoreline here with sandy beach access, hiking trails through coastal dunes and wetlands, and campsite facilities that draw RVers from across the entire region during the warmer months. The park's unique combination of sandy beaches, freshwater marshes, and prairie grasslands creates a diverse ecosystem that feels worlds away from the suburban sprawl just a few miles to the south. Zion sits along IL-173 and Sheridan Road with easy access to I-94 for reaching either Chicago to the south or Milwaukee to the north in about an hour. The city has basic services and the surrounding Lake County suburbs provide any additional supplies you might need. For RVers, this is one of the best lakefront camping opportunities in the entire Chicago area, and the state park campsite fills up fast during summer weekends -- you'll want to book well ahead if you want a spot.
