Quick Overview
Cobden is a small Union County village in the heart of southern Illinois wine country, sitting along US-51 between Carbondale and Anna at the edge of the Shawnee Hills region. With several motorhome campgrounds and parks in the area, including some free options, Cobden makes for an excellent base camp for exploring one of the most scenic and underrated regions in the entire state of Illinois. The Shawnee National Forest surrounds the area with dramatic bluffs, sandstone canyons, seasonal waterfalls, and dense hardwood forests that look more like the Ozarks than the flat prairies most people associate with Illinois. Cobden itself is known for its orchards and vineyards -- the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail passes right through the area with several tasting rooms within easy driving distance of any campsite. The terrain here is hilly, rocky, and heavily wooded, a dramatic departure from the rest of the state that surprises first-time visitors. The outdoor recreation opportunities are exceptional year-round. Giant City State Park is just to the northeast with its famous rock formations, and Trail of Tears State Forest is to the southwest with remote backcountry camping. For RVers who appreciate natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and good wine, Cobden and the surrounding Shawnee Hills deliver an experience that rivals anything in the Ozarks or Appalachian foothills at a fraction of the cost and without the heavy crowds you'd find at more famous destinations.

Cobden is on US-51 between Carbondale and Anna in Union County, in the southern tip of the state. From I-57, take the IL-13 west exit at Marion and head to Carbondale, then south on US-51 through the Shawnee Hills. From I-24, take US-51 north from the Vienna area through the forest. The roads through the Shawnee Hills are scenic but winding with some grades and tight turns -- take your time with bigger Class A rigs on the smaller forest roads, and know your clearances. US-51 itself handles RVs fine as a well-maintained two-lane highway. Fuel is available in Anna about 5 miles south or Carbondale about 15 miles north. Carbondale has Walmart, grocery stores, and SIU campus town amenities for all your supply runs.
